Detox Program
When you first enter into an addiction treatment center, you will enter into a detox program. A detox program refers to the process of physically withdrawing or removing all remaining toxins of drugs from your system. You must note that a detox program refers your withdrawing from any type of drugs, which includes illegal drugs, prescription drugs, and alcohol. You should also know that although a detox program may be the most physically uncomfortable part of your addiction treatment, it is only the beginning of your treatment. As you finish your detox period, you will begin to heal mentally from your addiction, and this can sometimes be more difficult than physically healing from it.
Now, the detoxification period is uncomfortable and may even be painful; however, if you have enrolled in a quality addiction treatment center, they will do everything in their power to alleviate some of the discomfort, if nothing else they will be able to offer you all of the support and security you need to get through this difficult period. The best tools you can have during detox is to be informed of what you may feel and to have a lot of support; and this is what an addiction treatment center will give you.
A Detox Program Causes Withdrawal Symptoms
If you have enrolled in an effective treatment center, they will inform you about the withdrawal symptoms their detox program may cause. As stated above, being informed as to what you may experience during a detox program is one of the best tools you can have, as fear of the unknown can cause you to fear treatment or, even worse, cause you not to want treatment. Moreover, you might even experience relief once you have completed the detox program and have not experienced as many withdrawal symptoms as you expected. One thing you should note is that drug addiction is as unique as each person that is addicted. This means your detox experience will differ from other peoples, so you may not experience the same withdrawal symptoms. However, there are common symptoms that almost everyone has experienced during detox that you should know about.
Some of the most common symptoms associated with any form of a drug detox program are sleeplessness, anxiety, night sweats, the shakes, anxiety, nausea, the chills, and irritability. You may experience all or a few of the symptoms, or some not listed. Moreover, the severity of these symptoms can vary, depending on which drug or drugs you are addicted too and because your addiction is unique. No one can say for certain what you will experience during your detox program, however, you can be informed about the basic components of detox.
What Happens After a Detox Program?
As already stated, your detox program is only one of the first steps in your addiction rehabilitation process. In fact, you will have many more treatments once you have completed the withdrawal stage of your treatment. Achieving last sobriety means healing your drug addiction in its entirety and this entails healing both your physical and mental addiction. The withdrawal part of your detox program did heal or at least remove your physical craving, however, you must now heal the most complex part of your addiction; your mental addiction. What may have started as a craving for the “high” associated with using drugs and alcohol has developed into a mental need to have the drug of choice in order to function and deal with normal life. This is why it is possible to crave your substance mentally and why there is a need for your detox program to include things such as therapy and group meetings to heal that mental addiction and retrain your thoughts away from your substance. In the treatments following detox, you will be learning why you started using your substances, how you became addicted, how to avoid becoming addicted again, and basically just learning about addiction in itself.
Effective Drug Treatment
It is a daunting task, searching for an addiction treatment center that offers an effective detox program. One of the first things you or your loved one needs to consider, in order to determine if the program being offered is effective, is the variety of treatment options offered. In fact, as stated above, since your addiction is unique to you, there should be a vast range of treatments available at any one center that is being considered. Anything less than this is setting you up for failure, as the addiction center is not adequately qualified to treat your individual addiction and individual needs. An effective detox treatment will do more than help you physically withdraw from your drug; it will employ programs that will treat you entire addiction. An effective drug treatment center will also offer a variety of treatments to treat each aspect because not every program may work for you.
Probably the most important asset a detoxification program can have is treatments that involve your family. Your addiction or substance abuse problem did not only affect you, it affected everyone you care about. Your loved ones deserve the chance to learn about your problem and deserve to be able to tell you exactly how they were affected. Facing the reality of your addiction in a detox program can help you achieve lasting sobriety while healing broken relationships and building a support system that will be needed outside of the treatment center.
After a Detox Program is Completed
One thing that you cannot be told enough is that your detox program is only the first step in your recovery process. In fact, rehabilitation is a long, hard road, which will continue well into your life outside of the treatment facility. This is why it is important for your detox program to suggest aftercare programs for you to attend once you have successfully completed their treatment plan. Aftercare is the part of your treatment that can continue for the rest of your life because your addiction can come back on you at any given moment. Aftercare is the meetings you attend once you have successfully completed your detox program treatment plan and are living at home, sober. An aftercare program is there to keep you on your path of sobriety by offering continued support for as long as you need it. Anytime you feel the temptation to use your substance of choice, you will be able to meet with other addicts and possible therapists or a sponsor to keep you on the path of sobriety.
